Q1: Agree or disagree: The Internet should be free from censorship?

I agree that the Internet should be free of censorship. There are three reasons why I believe this.

First, the Internet has become a primary source of information and communication for people all over the world. Just as we have a right to freedom of speech and information in our daily life, we should have the same freedoms on the Internet.

Secondly, government censorship of the Internet can become a threat to the free speech of citizens. When we look at this issue globally, we see that the governments which censor the Internet the most are often the least democratic. This is not a coincidence. Dictators are afraid to allow their citizens access to uncensored information and communication. In fact, the Internet has played an important role in recent revolutions, including those of the Arab Spring in the Middle East and North Africa.

Finally, censorship on a large scale gives too much power to censors. They make decisions that should be left to individuals and families. Some people may think that censorship is important for moral or religious reasons, but censorship done by government or other large organizations can be easily abused. It should be left up to users to make decisions about how the Internet should be used.

Q2: Should people be encouraged to buy more domestically produced goods?

I believe that people should be encouraged to buy domestically produced goods whenever possible. There are four reasons why I believe this is important.

First, buying domestically produced goods supports the national economy and creates jobs. The stronger the economy becomes, the more money people have to make future purchases.

Second, making domestic purchases helps protect the environment. Goods produced overseas have to be shipped long distances, requiring higher usage of energy, such as gas and oil. This results in more pollution and higher usage of carbon emissions, a cause of global warming.

Third, a nation is more secure when it produces its own products. For example, Japan now depends on foreign nations for much of its food. If a worldwide crisis were to happen and we were not able to obtain necessary food, the results would be serious or even dangerous for all Japanese people.

Finally, for things like food, domestically produced goods are often healthier. Domestic standards are higher and locally grown food is fresher and has fewer preservatives than food shipped long distances.

For these reasons, I believe it is a good thing to encourage purchases of domestically produced goods.

Q3: Agree or disagree: Advertising has a negative influence on society?

While advertising has a positive influence on society in some ways, it certainly has a negative influence as well. I’d like to focus on the negative influence.

Firstly, the aim of advertising is to get people to spend and consume more, which has the effect of making people more materialistic.
People never seem to be satisfied these days with what they have. Advertising makes us feel that our happiness depends on buying the newest and trendiest things. As a result, our garbage dumps are filled with items that are still useful, the air is being polluted and our global climate is changing.

Secondly, children are particularly vulnerable to advertising. They feel they need to have the toy that they see so powerfully advertised during their favorite show. Often, the toy is somehow tied into the show, or trading cards of favorite characters or a model of a loved superhero. Parents often feel forced to buy more for their children, which begins the child’s lifetime cycle of nonstop consumption.

Thirdly, advertising floods our world with noisy sales messages, including flyers and brochures in our mailboxes, ads on television, billboards on our highways, and spam in our email boxes. Many people feel they are drowning in a sea of advertising.

For these reasons, advertising plays a negative role in society.
