Programming your mind for success | Carrie Green | TEDxManchester | script

So, I wanna get you all involved to my talk today.
We’re gonna test out a little experiment, in order to do that I need somebody to come up here,
and join me on this stage.
So, please can I have a volunteer?

Don’t (???).
You can come join me up here with Ted, we’re gonna have a little couple of tea together.
Anyone? Come on!
You can come up just straight up to the front, whoever want, I’m not gonna pick anyone.
Someone has to come up, and there’s volunteers down here and bring you up onto this stage.
Oh, here somebody is.
(Applause)

It’s a bit of obstacle course I think.
I promise it’s worth it.
Ha-ha-ha-ha.(laughing)
Poor person.
Thank you. what’s your name? Ian?
Thank you so much, Ian. I have something for you.
You’ve just won 20 pounds. There you go, there you go.
Thank you so much.
So, you can go down by now.
Take (???).

So, my question to you is this.
“Why didn’t you volunteer?”
“What stopped you from coming up here?”
My guess is that was probably one of these reasons.
FEAR.
Fear, is coming up to here in front of nearly 1000 people is pretty damn scary.
Or maybe it’s fear of you have known, because you have no idea what I was gonna
get you to do.
Or maybe you thought,
“Oh, she’s gonna ask me to do something, I’m not gonna out to do, (???).

Or maybe, it was because of OBSTACLES.
There are quite a lot of obstacles in this room, maybe you are so far at the back,
you can just thought,
“Oh, my goodness. I am so far away, it’s dark, there are lots of tables in my way up,
if I fall over I look like a fool,
I just can’t do it, it’s too difficult, someone else has to volunteer for me.”

Or maybe, it’s just a luck of MOTIVATION.
Maybe you just couldn’t be bothered to move and come up here.
But, no matter what your reason was, your decision started up here.
(pointing her head)
In your mind.
Beacuse the moment I said, “please can I have a volunteer?”,
thoughts have started putting into your mind, the little voice inside your head had start
talking to you.
Maybe for some of you, it was saying,
“Oh, God. what is this girl gonna get us to do?
I don’t wanna go up there.
Please don’t make anything really stupid.”

And then, maybe for some other people,
(someone sneezes)
Woo.
Maybe for some other people, you would be thinking, down in front of you like,
“Oh, gosh. I don’t wanna do this. Look away, avoid eye contact, avoid eye contact.
Then she won’t pick me.”
And then, maybe for some of you when I said, “Please can I have a volunteer.”,
maybe fear and doubt and worries had spread through you and prospect of actually coming up here.
Coming up here in front of so many people.

And then, for those of you did volunteered, you would thinking something entirely different.
You were thinking things maybe like,
“Woo! She wants a volunteer. I wonder what she is going to ask to do.
How exciting! I’m gonna do it!”
Or maybe some of you thought,
“Oh, my gosh. This is really awkward.
No one is volunteering. So I’m gonna have to step up and do it.”

Those of you that didn’t volunteered, you missed out on the chance to win 20 pounds.
But this experiment isn’t about money.
This experiment demonstrates the power of your mind.
The fact that what is going on up in your head, in such a huge impact on the actions you take,
on the decisions you make,
on the things you experience.

And it’s not just in (?) situation like this, what people miss out on amazing opportunities.
People are missing out on incredible opportunities all at the time,
because of what going on in you head.
Because they are making bad decisions, based off the really bad frame of mind.
Those kind of self-limiting thoughts, like,
“I can’t do that.”
“I’m not good enough.”
“I don’t have the time or the money.”
Or maybe you think,
“I can’t be bothered. I just do it tomorrow”

But then, you will never do it.
So these wonderful ideas, I mean, incredible potentials, stay locked up inside,
and then you never do anything with them.
And that is exactly what was happening to me a few years ago.

It was the summer of 2005, I just finished studying my foot first year
of the law university of Birmingham.
And I had completely run out of money.
I was like. “What I’m gonna do!”
So I looked around for the jobs, and looking around how absolutely nothing appealing.
I was looking around for more opportunities, and eventually found this opportunity.
It was to start my very own mobile phone unlocking business, which basically mean,
if you had a mobile phone, it was locked with certain network,
and then you want to go travelling to Australia, you would use the Australian SIM card,
then you can come to the website, to unlock you phone.

There was just a few massive problems with this.
First off, I didn’t really know much about mobile phones, beyond the fact
that make calles and send texts,
Let alone mobile phone unlocking, and I had no idea, how to build an online business.
But the only other opportunity was (???) delay.
start my own business, so obviously went with the idea of starting business
is way more adventurous.
So I got started and I realized really quickly, when you don’t have a clue what to do.
The only thing you can do is to ask for help, and that is what I did.

So, I asked for help and within a few short weeks I put together probably the world worst website.
And I discovered Google Adwords as the way to drive traffic to the website.
And with the credit card, spending limit 30 pounds a day, my business was officially up and running.

(6:00)
Then over the next couple of years, when I was in studying my law degrees,
I was learning how to build this business.
I was reading books, I was listening to audio programs and in my final year,
I went to night school to learn more about web development.
I graduated in 2007 with an amazing degree and a business that was flying.
And I decided to being an entrepreneur was gonna be way more fun than being a lawyer.

So, I set my side high(?)
I decided to build business, to take the business global, to build a successful global business.
So I got a new supplier based on America who could unlock practically every phone under the Sun.
We redid the website, we expanded the team, we got really good online marketing.
And within a few years, we were receiving over 100,000 hit to our website every month.
And we are selling thousands of thousands of codes, every single month.
And I had reached my goal to build a successful global business.
But there was one massive problem.

(7:00)
I was miserable.
I was running this business predominately from my home office, where a little apartment,
my second bedroom is (?) to my office.
And I felt completely lonely, totally isolated and lost.
Something I think so many people experience, but not very many of them want to talk about.
And I crumbled. I started to question everything.
I thought questions like,
“What am I doing?”
“What is the plan of this?”

And more I thought about those questions confused I felt,
and the more confused I felt, the more these negative thoughts which climb my mind,
and I began to doubt everything, worry everything, about everything,
just question everything.
As months rolls by, I became more and more negative, more and more self-defeatist,
And literally, this positive, optimistic and go-get-person I want was,
had just disappearred.
I’ve become totally negative and self-sabotaging.
I come up with ideas and shoot thme down to toward myself out there.

(8:00)
And it got to 2010, I felt like I was completely dispair.
And so, I packed my bags, I flew traveling to Australia.
In the hope of having epiphany.
I spent 3 months travelling around Australia, no epiphany.
And I was just like what I’m supposed do.
So then I came back to UK, and even more miserable than before.
Because all of my problems are still waiting for me.
And the weather was rubbish.
(laughter)

So then I decided what I’m gonna do.
The next few months I found myself being suffocated by my problems.
The way you feel, like you just can’t get ready to doubt and worries.
All I’m gonna do is to focuse on.
I would come up with the ideas,
I would find opportunities,
I just told myself out there, thinking I couldn’t do it.

And then finally, in 2011, I figured out why I was going wrong.
and I believe I was going wrong for 2 massive reasons.
The first reason was that,
“Yes, I want to be successful.”
And quite frankly, doesn’t every single person in this room wants to be successful?
But mobile phone unlocking was not my dream.

And at the time I was reading the book by Michael Gerber (?)
and the email of chapters primary aims,
Michael Gerber says,
“Imagine walking into a room.
Inside the room, are your friends and family.
And as you walked down the center of the room, you see a box.
And as you get to front of the room, you realize that you are in the box.
And it’s your funeral.”

And he says,
“What kind of things you want to be saying?
about the kind of life that you lived,
about the kind of person that you were,
about the kind of the things that you achieved.”
And I realized, I had no idea.
So there was no wonder I felt, so off-track.
I had never ever be on track.

And the second reason why I think I went wrong,
is beacause what is going on up here?
What is going on in my head?
All these doubts, all these worries, all these self-limitting belief.

And I came across Anthony Robbins, he says,
“Your destiny is determined by the choices you make.
Choose now. Choose well.”
And I realized, that I was responsible for this misery.
I was responsible for the fact I was stucking around.
I remember looking my life thinking I’m waking up every single day and focusing on my problems.
I am waking up every day, and giving so much focus and attention to all of these awful thoughts, these doubts and worries.
I’m coming up with the ideas, and I’m shooting them down.
And I’m talking to myself out of doing anything whatsoever.
And I realized that if I wanted to live and incredible life and achieve ammazing things,
and I really did, that I had to get my mind, be on the same ways as Anthony.

I realized that I have to figure out what is I want to achieve,
why I wanted to achieve,
what I actually meant something to me.
I had to figure out what kind of person I need to become in order to make it happen.
And then I hacked a program in my mind to make it happen.

(11:11)
I had to program my mind for success.
And that is exactly what I ended up doing.
Mission, success, begun.
And so, I started this off by thinking what do I actually want?
And looked at my life, and I thought I love being entrepreneur,
and I love coming up with the ideas and turning them into the reality.
It’s so much fun.

And then I looked into my problems and thought,
I felt really lonely as a lot of entrepreneurs.
And I looked them into really different perspective,
rather than feeling really bad about that, I thought what can I do about it?

There must be other people out there, really exactly the same position as me.
So I came up with this idea to create the Female Entrepreneur Association.
And it’s so official.
And I was doing it.
I had massive ideas, I would create this global network of thousands of womens from all over the world.
And help to inspire them and connect them.
And just how to empower them to build successful businesses.
I had no idea how I was going to do this.

And so then I was right,
I need to program my mind to make this happen.
So I started by becoming consciously aware of all the things I was thinking every day.
And whenever I catch myself thinking something like,
“Carrie, who is gonna come to the website?”
And (???) you give advice to anyone?
“This is rubbish. No one is. This is ridiculous idea. You never gonna be able to do it.”

Every time I call myself saying something like that,
I would stop myself. And I realized I had the power to take control over my thoughts,
rather than letting them controling me.
I knew that I could stop myself thinking these things.
And I did.
And replaced negative, rubbish, annoying thought.
And I told them to shut up.

And I replaced them with positive thoughts that were empowering me.
Thoughts actually helping me, to move towards my goal.
I also thought to listen to guided visualization to program my subconsious mind for success.
And I got really into doing visualizations.
Vividly picturing what I wanted to achieve.
Seeing it happen, and feeling it happen, happening right then and there.
Just like all the top athletes do.

I got so clear on why I want to make it happen, and since then, my life has totally changed.
I (???) one of the largest online networking groups, female entrepreneurs over 100,000 women involved.
And then I came up with this crazy idea to launch a degital magazine,
which then became the fastest growing magazine to female entrepreneurs.

And when I created it, I made a wish list to my mind, all the people I want to in front cover.
These best selling authors, these incredibly successful entrepreneurs.
I had no idea how would make it happen but I was so convinced to that I would do it

I then put the faces on the mock up of the front cover,
printed them off, stuck them on my goal board,
and I just visualized them being on the front cover,
visualized what it would feel like I would send down email to my network.
And I could say to them,
“Hey, everyone, this person is in a front cover of this month. How exciting!”
I got so unbelievably clear about what I want to do them.
People come up to me,
“Carrie, How you gonna make this happen?”
I was like,
“I don’t know. but I’m going to make it happen.”

And it did happen.
So then I thought to myself.
“What other crazy goals could I make it happen, what else is possible?”
So I set more crazy goals to myself, like,
“I wanna go to Backingham Palace.
I wanna go to the house of Lords.
I wanna speak at the house of Commons.”

And last year, every single one of them happened.
And I realized that if I could get my mind to be certain, that I could make something to happen.
That somehow, I would figure out a way.
And I always have.

Because success is no accident.
Living incredible life is no accident.
You have to do it on purpose.
And it starts by knowing exactly what is you want to achieve.
Knowing why you want to achieve it,
knowing the kind of person that you need to become, in order to make it happen.

And then programming your mind to make it happen.
Because you just have one life, in which to achive everything you are gonna achieve.
So you have to act accordingly.
Thank you so much.
